Background of the Study

Political mentorship is a cornerstone of leadership development, fostering the transfer of knowledge, skills, and values from seasoned politicians to emerging leaders. In Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State, political mentorship has gained attention due to the increasing participation of youth in governance. Effective mentorship programs bridge generational gaps, build leadership capacity, and promote sustainable political practices (Audu & Ibrahim, 2023). However, the process of mentorship in Kachia LGA is often impeded by patronage politics, inadequate resources, and a lack of structured mentorship frameworks (Ahmed et al., 2024). Understanding the dynamics of political mentorship in Kachia is crucial for fostering a new generation of leaders capable of addressing local governance challenges. This study explores the role of political mentorship in shaping the leadership trajectories of emerging youth leaders in Kachia LGA.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the critical role of mentorship in leadership development, many youth leaders in Kachia LGA lack access to structured mentorship opportunities. This gap has contributed to leadership deficiencies, poor governance practices, and limited youth representation in decision-making processes (Usman & Musa, 2023). Additionally, the prevalence of clientelism often skews mentorship relationships, prioritizing loyalty over competence. Addressing these issues requires an assessment of the existing mentorship practices and their effectiveness in developing competent leaders in Kachia LGA.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the role of political mentorship in leadership development in Kachia LGA.

  2. To evaluate the challenges faced by emerging youth leaders in accessing mentorship opportunities.

  3. To propose strategies for enhancing political mentorship in Kachia LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What role does political mentorship play in leadership development in Kachia LGA?

  2. What challenges hinder emerging youth leaders from accessing mentorship opportunities in Kachia LGA?

  3. What strategies can improve political mentorship in Kachia LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Political mentorship significantly contributes to leadership development in Kachia LGA.

  2. Emerging youth leaders in Kachia LGA face significant barriers to accessing mentorship opportunities.

  3. Structured mentorship programs can enhance leadership development in Kachia LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for policymakers, political mentors, and youth organizations interested in fostering leadership development. By focusing on Kachia LGA, the research provides insights into the dynamics of political mentorship and its impact on governance. The findings will guide the design of mentorship frameworks that address the specific needs of youth leaders, contributing to sustainable leadership practices in local governance.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of political mentorship in leadership development among emerging youth leaders in Kachia LGA, Kaduna State.
